What’s out there? Socially engaged and situated art practices at the time of the pandemic
The pandemic raises a series of questions which numerous artistic practices are trying to face. Numerous critical aspects linked to our capitalist and globalized society have been put in crisis by the arrival of the virus, rather than by common or institutional efforts to promote a real change on accessibility, sustainability, solidarity. Through their daily actions, socially engaged art projects are building support structures in terms of marginality, spaces, relationships in the impossibility of moving and physically meeting, questioning the institutions on doing so. Through a local approach linked to the notion of public space, they are proposing alternatives to global problems, inquiring digital instruments for their narration. The talk is articulated through an analysis of some artistic practices that can help on imagining how and where do we gather now.
Sara Alberani is an art historian and independent curator based in Rome. Her curatorial practice focuses on socially engaged art is rooted within her context of origin, the farmer and working class in the territory of the Italian province. She is co-founder of LOCALES, a curatorial platform promoting site-specific and situated art practices in Rome. Current collaborations involve amongst others: Artists at Risk, CuratorLab - Konstfack University Stockholm, Visible Project by Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto, KENE by Mohamed Keita and Trampoline House community (documenta 15).
